When we think of diversity we tend to link it with color and race when in actuality it is just more than color and race. Diversity can also mean the way we dress, or look, or even how we assimilate into society. Diversity can also be associated with gender, male, female, transsexual, etc. Hence, when we looked at the Nikki Lee photos we were surprised at how one person can play so many different people. Therefore, the question that arises is whether or not diversity really exists and if not, in what ways can people overcome the concept of diversity? Nikki Lee as one single person overcame the notion of differences as she portrayed the the Southern person sitting next to a man with a gun. She portrayed a punk girl, a Latina girl, and a sophisticated business woman.

Even if diversity can be overcome, an individual still retains that individuality. In my opinion, one should stick to oneself. We do not want a society where everyone is the same, that would be boring. We would end up being machines by assimilating into expectations of society. A community arises from differences in individuals. In the 21st century, race is overlooked because we have passed that cycle. Therefore, diversity is normal and being different is also a norm.

The photograph of the mother and her children was a heartbreaking photo of the Great Depression. When we first have a glimpse of the photo we think of the family living in underprivileged circumstances. Yet, the secret behind the photo is that the family is waiting for their car to be repaired. However, the expression of the faces and the situation leads us to sympathize with the family and wish we could do something for them. After all being a single mother and raising seven children is not a child’s play. The photograph was used to show to the government the condition of everydya American families and so, color and race maybe overlooked.

What some people do not know is that the mother is of Native American descent. She has some Cherokee background. This was a controversy at the time since Native Americans were treated differently in terms of their land rights. In addition, the mother had many affairs and even worked as a waitress. While these facts may be surprising it also brings out the question of femininity. In a way it strengthens the feminine argument because it is portraying a single mother with her children. In mainstream society and in most families a fatherly figure is present, but in this photograph there is a woman. It goes to show that even women can take care of their families as well as men can do.

Everyone knows that Wonder Woman is the strong, brave, and fit woman who saves the day using her magic, golden lasso. Yet, is she just a strong woman with a courageous personality and a strong figure, or something more She is one of the first women to enter the male-dominated superhero role. She is the perfect example who overcomes gender barriers and preconceived gender roles. In her native homeland of Amazon, women are the empowering force. Whereas in the Superman and Batman films, the male hero usually saves the day, in this film, it was a woman who saved the day and a man, Steve.

In addition, since there is some graphic violence in the film, the directors chose to produce a animated film, in order to shun the violence and gore. Yet, there is still some mild language. Maybe this is not the kind of movie young boys would want to watch as they are attracted more to the action figures of the various male heroes. Or perhaps they would like to view real live action instead of the animated graphics presented throughout the film. Besides violence and gore in the film, there are also scenes of vulgarity. For instance, hen Steve enters the Amazon world and sees all the women bathing, or when Diana is getting dressed in her new outfit. The outfit itself is very tempting because of the red bustier and blue underwear. When Wonder Woman is getting dressed for her mission, one can see her pushing up the bustier to her breasts, which is one form of sensuality. It goes to show that no matter animated or live action, violence is violence and sex sells at the end of the day.

When we were kids, we did not look at the kind of clothes our idols wore or how they did their hair, or if they were half-naked or not. We admired their powers, their immortal abilities, and their strength. We overlooked the attire of superheros. Now, that we are much older we have a different perspective of our superheros. We take careful note of their style of clothing and their physical appearance. One common conception associated with superhero attire is the tight, fitting aspect. When we see superheros wearing tight, bearing their bodies through their outfits, we can almost see their abdomens through those tight tops and bottoms. This leads to them having a sexual appeal amongst the teenage audience. Richard B. Woodward, in his essay stated that “there are provocative-even kinky-touches throughout her wardrobe” (McQuade 558). This goes to show that wonder woman’s attire is seductive which is why she as an individual is attractive to her male audience. In fact, she was one of the first women to be part of a male-dominated group of super heros. Hence, her muscular and tone-figured arouses the male audience even more. Many of the superheros can be traced back to Greek mythology. Wonder Woman for instance is said to be more beuatiful than Aphrodite. Her homeland also resembles a Greek mythological setting. Superheros’ attire and appearance are resemblant of Greek mythological heros as well such as Hercules or Persues. Their immortal powers are derived from these mythological allusions. Therefore, they are more than human to us as an audeince.

Usually when we hear diversity, we tend to think of color. Color is what comes to our minds first. When we mention college diversity, we ten to associate it with various racial backgrounds. However, we normally do not tend to associate the word diversity with gender, nor sexual orientation, nor disability. Robert Shiremen discusses the importance of addressing diversity in a way that will make sense for a particular institution (McQuade 462). He points out that diversity does not necessarily have to mean race and color. Instead colleges should assess student enrollment by race and socioeconomic factors. Also, when there is a factor other than race included in college progress assessment, the outcome is different from when race was a factor in assessing college progress.

One category that should direly be taken into consideration when speaking of diversity is one’s overall upbringing. One’s environment where one was brought up should be taken into consideration when examining diversity. In that way, there is a diversity among classroom discussions. Students tend to have different perspectives about different issues and that can be a result of the environment they were raised in. If a certain organization or social group included the an environment of upbringing as a category in diversity, maybe the outcome in assessment of college progress may turn out to be different then what it is now. It is necessary to broaden the concept of diversity because if colleges confine the concept to only two or three categories, the results are not really vast. The term diversity does not only apply to color, race, or class in the dictionary but is defined as variety, and this variety can apply to any category whether it is socioeconomic backgrounds, gender, or even sexual orientation.

The first three parts of the poem sound as if they were commands. The first line begins with “Do not dwell on the fork”. The sixth line says “Do not become” and the tenth line says, “Look behind the eyes”. Although these lines sound like commands, they are implying and suggesting what to do and what not to do. After the commanding actions, there are metaphors and similes in each part. Each part also has its own little them. For instance in lines 1-5, there is mention of a gothic angel wing and heaven. It looks like a mythological and religious setting. Whereas, the second part portrays a farm-like environment with cows and farmers. After these suggested actions, the last two lines present two statements. It is as if these two lines came about as a result of the three parts of the poem. These two lines are more connected to the third part of the poem, lines 10-11. “Look behind the yes to see who looks out at you”. “We are not what we own; We own what we would be”. The last two lines are in logical order. They sound as if they were an argument. It is saying that we are not material possession or qualities that we own but there are things we aspire to be that we own. Therefore, the final line in a way contradicts its penultimate line and is its reverse.

The image on page 514 is very dull and ghostly. Its is black and white. The background is mostly covered with the American flag. The lighting is coming from the left frame, but not giving much of a glow to the photograph. The subject is not smiling and is holding a broom. The setting is 1942, at the time of the second world war. This is a spin off the 1930 version of “American Gothic” and in that photograph there is a couple and the man is holding a pitchfork whereas the woman is looking away from the camera. The couple do not look very happy either. In a way the image relates to the last line of Jane Yolen’s poem. Ownership can also mean a sense of pride, and what we see as dull and deem as “unhappy” can be a sign of being proud. And so, these people may own what they aspire to become in the near future.

The line that struck me most in David Mura’s poem is “Inside my chest I still hold corridors of sunlight. Villages where palms and pomegranates and linen blow” (lines 13-14). These two lines are in conjunction with the tropical-green-like shade surrounding the subject of the painting. It goes to show that she still cares about roots and has not forgotten it yet. She is not ready to assimilate in this new culture she has been placed in. She still feels the essence of her island, the fruits and the sun shining on her. In the painting there is no sunlight but there is are shades of red which can represent the pomegranate. The subject can slit visualize and see when she closes her eyes the beauty of her island, not this new world she is in. Hence if I were to rename this poem after looking at the painting, I would name it Mali: Past, Present, Future because she is not in the past, she is still in the present thinking about her past, and she is not really looking into the future yet. Therefore, it is a combination of all three.

Pacita Abad captures the story of a girl who is unfamiliar with a new place, and is still holding on to her roots. Literally speaking, her position in the painting is in the center of the frame. Therefore, she is the focal point of this piece. Then, banners of prestigious colleges, university buildings, and computers are surrounding her. She is also in the midst of this green, tropical-like atmosphere, which portrays her foundation, and her origins. With these explicit details, it seems as if she is at the point in her life where she is not in the future, nor she is in the past. She is in the middle of those two areas, the present. She has not fully forgotten of her roots, nor she has fully assimilated into the American culture. In addition, she is not facing the prestigious schools behind her, nor is she looking down at the computers at the foregrounds of the piece. This may imply that she is not ambitious yet. More so, she is not ready to conform to this new world she is in. The portrait also displays this confusion of the subject. She is not quite sure of her identity because she is combining her roots and this new world shehas arrived at.

The Visa ad portrays the comfort and luxury the Visa card offers. It shows a man sleepin on a bad with his guitar, holding it. It seemes as if he is a rock-n-roll type of person because of his long hair. Also, he is the focal point with the guitar. On the left side of the frame, one can see light shining in from his window, giving the entire photo a bright frame. Also, in the middle of the framing we see a line in small black print saying, “It’s Your Life. How Do you want to spend it?” Apparently this person in the ad is willing to spend his life with a guitar, because he is holding it. Since he is sleeping, he looks very peaceful and is in immense comfort. Perhaps the ad is implying that you do not even have to get up and spend your money. All one needs to do is swipe the card. On the bottom of the photograph states, “It’s Everywhere You Want to Be”. Therefore, it is suggesting that the Visa card is simple to use and you can take it anywhere with you, spend money the way you want to spend it. It is targeting ambitious people and also the yputh because the youth is usually associated with wanting freedom and liberation. This is what the ad is implying, you can make the choices in your life and it is up to you to deiced how to do it.

AUdience is also a big part of photograper Nikki Lee’s work. In the five photographs we examined, each photograph tells a different story. Each photograph is targeted towards different people. For insatnce, the photograph with the COnfederate flag on the wall, and the man holding the gun can target the Southern hard-core patriot-whites who are true to their roots. It protrays violence and hatred. The photograp of Nikki Lee sitting in a chair, wearing a business attire attracts business men and women and even ambitious and sophistacated people. Each photograph is different but what is common among all of them is Nikki herslef. The person is the same, but the atmosphere is different. It goes to show that one has to adjust oneself to fit in a certain crowd or community. As a result it leads to societal conformities of differences. As we discussed before with gender that there exists preconcieved gender roles, making men dominant and women inferior. In a similar way society and culture adopts differences. It is almost as if one has to fully change oneself if one wants to overcome these differences. Perhaps with thost intentions, Nikki Lee decided to shoot these stills.

One of the definitions of humor in the Merriam Webster dictionary is the mental faculty of discovering, expressing, or appreciating the ludicrous or absurdly incongruous. Humor is present to make us laugh. We find it very entertaining, especially in times of serious matter. It can also be comforting and help us deviate from the misery and struggles in our lives. Jane Slaughter uses humor to evade the tragedy in domestic violence. On the second page of her essay, she directly states that joking is a way to deal with our culture’s preoccupation with sex, violence, etc. Her ideas do not subvert these preoccupations wholly. She is aware of the fact that any woman can be bruised, have a black eye, and be on crutches. She has not completely ignored the existence of gender role, and violence. In addition, she states that it is not just domestic violence that can physically hurt people, but fights and even incidents of klutz (McQuade 366).

The ad on page 402 encourages women to join the army because they will have the experience of gaining more responsibilities. In a way, it reinforces gender role because the ad is suggesting that initially women stay home, do the passive activities whereas men go out and fight. It even says “The point is, a woman in the Army is still a woman. You carry yourself with a little more confidence. And you may find yourself shouldering more responsibility than you ever dreamed because in the Army, you’ll gain more experience you cant find anywhere else” (McQuade 402). They intend to say that generally women are confined to do the things a homemaker, a mother, a sister would do, but the Army is a place where she can do much more than that. The Army will give a woman the respect and status she deserves.

Humor to a certain extent subverts gender role. Humor is a technique to avoid the tension and fury when it comes to discussing preconceived gender role. However, that does not mean it totally diminishes those roles. For instance, the cartoon on page 394 shows a father who is encouraging his daughter to play with a fire truck rather than a doll. He even states that he does not want her to reinforce preconceived gender roles. Yet, the daughter still continues to treat the truck as if it were a doll, more so a baby, which disappoints the father. And so, it shows that gender role will exist no matter what but we can use humor and laugh about it to get rid of its negativity. We can try to overcome gender role but since it is embedded within our culture since thousands of years ago, we cannot wholly get rid of it.
